Based on the background of a brief overview of the most important changes in higher education in Poland, which has significantly influenced the position of academic teachers, an attempt was made to answer the question of whether the ideas and preferences of academic teachers associated with their profession are in line with the expectations of students. The research was based on selected results of a survey of the professional identity of academic teachers (2013) and a survey of study the motives and the evaluation of classes (2007 and 2010). The teachers' beliefs on the main goals of a university and declared preferences associated with their professional roles were compared with students' expectations represented by reasons to study and their opinions concerning participation in university classes. The results reveal signs of a crisis of academic's teachers professional identity which affects the ability to meet the expectations of students taking a degree in economics.Downloads
